I'm new at Innertraveler and I'm also new to computer graphics. I'm a salesman by trade. But one day I got to see a friend's copy of Bryce and I've been hooked ever since. I'm thinking of upgrading to 3D studio max, Maya or Lightwave, but I'm not sure which one. Any suggestions or opinions would be appreciated.

I'm new too. Actually I think this website went up fairly recently, so everybody here is really new.
My area of concentration so far has been Terragen. So I don't know anything about high end 3D software, like 3DS and Maya. I'm afraid I can't help you there, but I'm sure someone on this site will give you some pointers.
Anyway,Welcome to the website! ;)

Re: maya 5 vs max 6.
I've heard that maya is more powerful than 3ds max. This means that you can coax Maya to do special things,
but it also means that often there are no buttons or icons in the maya interface. In fact, frequently you'll have
to do things by hand. But it IS more powerful.
Hope this helps. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable on the subject than me will reply soon. :o
