My friend and online Brother Ken is from Tupelo Mississippi. Every year in the summer he and his wife pack up the camper and move to the Gulp coast for a month or so for vacation. They have usually gone to Gulfport Mississippi. And this year was no different. But Fortunetly they were evacuated the day before Katrina hit. Knowing that water could do a lot of damage in storm surges. They moved up into Alabama about 200 miles away from the Gulf. Yester day he sent me some pics. He had gone back down to Gulfport and this is a couple of the pics he sent. Gulfport does not exist any more. The devastation is total as far inland as 10 miles or more. Water in some places got 50 feet deep.

I thought you might like to see a couple of these pics to show you the aftermath of this storm. I'll post more later.

Wow, it is shocking to see the devestation that a "natural" force can cause. Your friend was lucky he got evacuated before it hit. I was watching the news everynight to see what was happening and found it almost unbelivable to see what was going on. :raincloud - Yet you look at these photo's now and see the calm waters, sun shine, and the clear blue sky, and just shake your head in wonder and disbelief. Nature at her best, and her worst.

I think one thing I found very strange even spirtual none of the saint statues
had damage sure they found some under trees etc but one was clearly in the open no damage what so ever.. Almost like she was trying to protect the city .. It is a horrible diaster so many needless lifes were lost and even on CNN the children that no one can find.. I know we even have evacuee's here in California now... I have a girlfriend in Mississippi they were lucky the hardest hit was 60 miles from them... she is ready to move completely out of the state..her hubby worked in Biloxi in the ship yards that are no longer there.......Very Sad

Its truely a sad time in the gulf region.

Here are a couple more pics..
He told me the roads were littered with debris this shows what the coast line and roads look like, Once buildings and business.. now gone...

And lastly how one building can seem virtually untouched and another totally gone.. leaving only a stairway... to nowhere

Truly amazing how that stairway still stands, yet the building it was once attached to is gone. Seeing the photo's really brings home how devastating this hurricane was. Rebuilding home's and lives is going to take a long, long time. :raincloud

I used to live in Florida, for many years, my brother is still there, well I remember watching the hurricanes arriving and departing... the most amazing time was always when the eye passed over... odd and other worldly... and you never ever doubted mother nature back then...

Amazing photos of the devastation and of the oncoming storm. I find myself thinking about how powerful the forces of nature are and that no man or government can exert any control over these forces. God is really in control.

Here are another two images that my pen friend sent me of Katrina arriving:

You have to marvel at the force and the "beauty" of it, even knowing the devastation that it caused.

I don't want to burst any bubbles - but those awesome images of storms are not Katrina... they are photos of huge tornadoes taken in 2004...

Totally amazing pics though, aren't they?

Hurricanes don't take great photos - except from space...

You know I wondered about those last two when I saw them.. I thought looks more like kansas and tornados than mississippi or lousiana. Now the first one could very muchly be some storm bands, but why would you friend still have been there Angie ? If those were truely pics the devistation was horrific and most people thank god were out of the area.

Oh btw the new one.. dang its heading for the texas lousiana borders. Could cause even more destruction. Heres a link to a motion satilite view of Rita in the gulf... you can watch how its moved over a few hours time.. RITA (http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/DATA/RT/gmex-vis-loop.html)
