FIRSTLY, THIS IS NOT AN ATTEMPT TO GET ATTENTION TO ANY OF MY ART, IT'S A GENUINE PROBLEM I NEED SOLVING IF ANYONE KNOWS HOW...

I just had a really odd problem with uploading a picture, and wonder if anyone can suggest why this might have been..

What I noticed was that the normal sized image you see when you open it was completely fuzzy and awful looking, but when this was clicked on to get the fuller size, it was perfectly fine. I've never had this happen before.

I edited the picture, by replacing it several times, even changing the name of the original, and then re-making the original from the PSP file and so on and uploading that, but every time, there was exactly the same problem! In the end, I deleted the picture off the gallery and did a completely fresh upload. Still the same problem, and now of course, I had lost all comments into the bargain!

I also, on each occasion, deleted my internet files, including off-line ones, but this made no difference whatever! It was still a mess! Oh I also looked at it on my hubby's computer, and it was exactly the same!

I have permanently deleted it from the gallery now, but here it is direct from a website I've temporarily put it on, and if anyone can tell me why this phenomena happened I'd be very grateful! Thanks.

EDIT 25th Oct. I've deleted the link, as I think we have established the answer to be something to do with the actual colours used together with certain filtering techniques not working so well on upload. Thanks for all input. I'm closing this now.

I've not heard of this happening before, nor do I know why it might have happened. It would be useful to be able to see what you mean by "completely fuzzy and awful looking" though.

With regards to the link, is that the full size image?

I've had some of my flame fractal images come out "icky" when I convert them to jpg... I render my stuff to 1280x960 png files, then resize them down to 1024x768 and convert to jpg with a 3rd party program.

Maybe the gallery conversion program is messing up the image when it creates the 640x480 standard image?

Pretty picture though...

It happens to me depending on what filters I use. For instance if I use a filter such as a lithograph filter the smaller I make the picture the worse it gets. It actually will look crinkly. When its full size or the size that I made the pic and put the filter on it is fine. Its something to do with the noise. And honestly I don't know what to tell you to do for small size pics. They look different at each size but the full one will be great. I don't know what kind of filtering you did but more than likely thats your problem.

I had it happen only once - I normally use Photoshop for my postwork and on one occasion decided that only PSP would do for the effect I was after - I saved the image as a jpeg in PSP and uploaded it and it looked awful! loads of artifacts and jaggy edges. I deleted the image - did my postwork in photoshop just missing out the final step that I had taken in PSP and when I uploaded that image it was fine. I always felt it had more to do with PSP than with anything here at IT.

Thanks for your replies so far..

Firstly, this picture that you see here is at full size - one of my smaller ones (umm.. with a flaw in it too, I notice, just above the tail)! lol! But it doesn't quite reach this size on the first click on the picture, and that's when it looks so awful.

Secondly, I have a feeling it's simply the effect of the colours jazzing up for some reason (reddish colours can tend to stand out over other colours). I did certainly use certain filters (from Filters Unlimited), but these have never given me any problem before. The only thing that stood out as "normal" in the smaller version was the unicorn - well it's magic, huh? :jawdrop:

Just an interesting point, Angela, what you were trying to do would probably have worked if you'd save the pic as a TIFF rather than a jpeg before going into PSP, and then only converting it to jpeg when you have finished all you're going to do with the picture. I never save as jpeg until the very last minute, because yes, each time you save in jpeg format you lose more and more information. (I hate that format, but there you go!)

Just for Rumour, I'll upload it again into the MM gallery in a minute and see if it's still "doing it". Once you've seen it in its messy state, let me know and I'll delete it again, lol! (Don't like to see my stuff looking like that!)

Anyway, maybe now that some hours have passed since I re-loaded it for about 5 times last night, it'll upload correctly now, who knows! (What I did notice was that despite saving the pic under a slightly different name, it was still calling for the original named one.. Now that was odd! Nicky.

I know I have had this happen before also, however it seems to do it more with brighter colors like in reds example. if it is in say a darker color it does post fine. and I do use psp7.. I can not say it is specifly psp nor can I say it isn't .. for me I do believe it is the sharpening, or to many filters being used along with a brighter color seems to cause it for me..

I speak only of how I fine it causes problems for me.
Some of the filters in ICnet unlimited do cause problems.. If you are using that one, sorry not sure of the complete name for it.
