PAT (ppetersen) HAS CHOSEN THE THEME FOR OUR NOVEMBER CHALLENGE,
AND IT IS....
:chorus:
******* "MIDDLE EARTH" *******
(EDIT: as in Tolkien's work, and referred to fantasy in general, see discussion below.)
RULES:
1) ONE small external object is allowed (for example a bird, a small tower, a person with a mage outfit, a bridge...), along with the postwork due to fit it into the image (shadow, blending, etc...). "Small" means that the focus of the image must remain on the Terragen part, with object used for the characterisation of the location or adding to the mood. So no predominant posed figures on the front, or big structures taking most of the image.
No other postwork than the usual resizing, level adjustment, sharpening...
2) Up to THREE images for each artist.
3) The contest will run until november, 24th. The voting, by a thread I will open at the right time, will start on november, 25th and end november, 30th. Each person who has submitted an image will have THREE votes to cast on images, which will all be worth ONE point.
4) The winner will CHOOSE THE THEME FOR THE NEXT OFFICIAL I.T. TERRAGEN CONTEST!
5) You may begin to upload your images from november 9th, and the last images must be online on november 24th. Then it depends on how the poll on the judging will go (I will post later the voting period, if any).
6) For any questions please use this thread, and I'll try and answer a.s.a.p. (but note that on saturdays and sundays I am not online).
GOOD WORK!!!!!!! :w00t: :p :bounce:

Its means this to me - Middle-earth that is supernatural; meaning effects which cannot be achieved by normal, everyday methods. This process can be interpreted as "magic". There are examples of spontaneous creation of fire, songs of power, words of command, miraculous healing, runes of power, and weapons with special abilities.
Heres a good pic for me any way -

Uh, I had to explain myself!!!! SORRY!!!!!
Not everyone knows that "The Lord Of The Rings" takes place in "Middle Earth". A place of magic, strange creatures, green lands, forests, ancient ruins......
This is the idea. You may get inspiration from the movies of the Trilogy from Peter Jackson, from the book by Tolkien, if you have read it, from any fantasy idea that comes to your mind!!!
Feel free to ride the waves of imagination!

Ahh middle earth.. guess you can use the LOTR series since thats where that phrase comes from. Like The shire or Mordor or Rivendale , Lothlorien... Lots of things :) I like this idea Im just not sure my terragen does lol :)

Oh, terragen more than does. Among my first dozen or so of serious renders (and I think the first I ever uploaded to an art site) there was an image called "Lord of the Green" (You may still see it HERE (http://tcr.ashundar.com/data/media/12/big/lord_of_the_green.jpg)) (you are free to rofl, now), which was inspired by the lush greens of Middle Earth. It was pure terragen, no postwork, no level adjustment, still I like it and makes me think about its title every time I see it (And I have made a new better version of it, which you'll see one day or another). It's not about objects (or brushes, it's ok, Carolyn!), but about the feeling of being in a special place, for me. And Terragen is capable of it, give it a try! :headbang:

:) Looking forward to many magical and tolkienish sites for this... also too think along the lines of where Mordor was... dark and volcanic, black rocks and low misty atmosphere dark skies. Or snow capped mountains where the hobbits had to climb... huge mountains, with grey overcast skies... or perhaps the river where they traveled. So many visions that come in play here ... :) Good luck to all.... ahhh a magical mystical month in IT...

Yes, and you and Ron are more than welcome to the contest. I really think the two of you are getting really competitive with your work!

I haven't read any of Tolkien's books or seen any of the films, so I've had to make up my own tale! I hope they're OK for the contest... Now Rev, please don't hit me, OK? I've done as you asked as best I can, lol! :worship:
At least I'm safe from the need to choose the theme of the next challenge! (I know that sounds negative, but I've already spotted others far more advanced than my own efforts! I just enjoy the fun of the challenge!)

Challenge equals fun at first, then maybe someone is interested in actually winning...
Don't worry Nicky, any fantasy setting is well accepted!

Thanks Rev, I think at this stage that my techniques fall far short of a win, but having the challenge to work for gives me some incentive to have a go at least, and as I do so, I gradually learn more about TG in its own right. There's so much I don't know, like for instance, you appear to have imported a self-made detail to go with the terrain and a whole scene almost, (which would normally, for someone like me, have been done as postwork) from Photoshop into TG. I haven't a clue how this is done, but of course I could do the same if I knew how! The only difference as I see it though, is that one is pre-work (allowed) and the other is post-work (not allowed). Hmmm..
Unfortunatley I haven't the time it takes to get fully to grips with all of this stuff, especially at the moment as my husband is really quite ill, so am I, and we are having a tough time just surviving each day at the moment. (He is awaiting an urgent brain scan to try and determine what's causing the most horrendously painful migraines ever coupled with serious weight-loss, but urgent for our NHS isn't urgent enough!)
If you can tell me how to make TG "realise" a scene made elsewhere, what format it should be in, and how to get it in there, I'd be very happy to then build the terrain around it, or whatever it is you do!

Not a bad idea Rev I know how to bring in a world but to bring in textures the biggest problem is Terragen won't accept the image. some are gray scaled some are not, some are bmp some jpgs....
what should they be:) :D
