View Full Version : Hosting Files?

When Jrsaldana PMed me for the theme of the new terragen challenge, he asked if it would be possible to share a terragen terrain to use as a base for the image. I was a little clueless: can we on IT in any way host files for people to download?
Or, better, is there anyone of you who has a little space on occasions where to put a , say, ".ter" file for a limited amount of time so that all of the challengers may download it and use it as a terrain for the challenge render?
Maybe Carolyn? I remember a while ago you told me something like that?

no problem, I think! When I get the file I can host it on my site to download it for the others... the idea is fantastic!! When everybody starts with the same terrain we could see a lot of different versions!
send the terragen file to my e-mail adress and I will upload it on my webspace tomorrow evening!

Great idea, I would offer my space but the file couldn't stay there long with all the stuff I have on my site I have to keep taking things off to make room for new off and on. Thanks to Robert though! Nice gesture

Robert_S: thank you!
Carolyn also gave me her support, in the mod forum.
It may be useful to use both of your hosts, to make sure there is a source for the files at any time for the contestants. This time, given the contest has already begun, we won't use this facility, but next time one of the winner agrees, we will have a new idea to play with!!!

Robert_S
11th January 2006, 14:16
Wonderful!
@vos: we can play with it now, maybe in the collaboration forum? I could upload a 2048x2048 worldmachine made terragen file for example or other resolutions as well... maybe you send me a file and I'll upload it that everybody here can play with it!

Robert has a good idea Chris I think we all have saved files we could share would certainly give us all a chance to work on some different ones. may not be a bad idea to make some of these available in the free area also. Im sure a lot of people would like them but don't want to ask, could be tgw. surfaces, atmosphere's and terrains, dem files etc course any textures would also be good too. :D
We're here to share right? :D

Hi Robert,Carolyn
I do not have terrain files, sorry,I have also the free version from Terragen.
But I like the idea very much, collaboration gallery is ok for me.
Yep let's do it!!! :bounce:

11th January 2006, 16:51
Chris, even with the free version of Terragen, you can use 513 files, and I've the free version of World Machine, so all the terrains I do are originally 512 I think and then I resize in Terragen to 1025. I like that size best :) So I'll happily share any by zipping them and sending to whomever ... :) same for my atmosphere files... I would say surface ones, but eeks those are quite good enough just yet... LOL.

Ok when do we start!!!
classylady
11th January 2006, 17:42
Pat if you want send them to me classylady@r-windham.com
even if you want to list them in the free section and odn't have a site I can still host them for you or anyone for that matter.
just send away... :beerchug:
I will also go through mine I know we have plenty that are also for the free version so no problem there Chris

jr I believe Rev is going ahead with the dessert challenge but without a pre made terrain maybe a good idea to check with him. or see notes in another thread I believe the annoucement of the challenge..
either way we can host it with no problem.

What's the outcome of all this???
The challenge had already begun without the needed file, people have started uploading images, I haven't seen any links to a file yet, and am totally confused!
Is it a bit late now to change the original rules and include a ter file? Maybe next time it could be done? I'd like to know what has been decided - and have I missed the link somewhere? (In which case have others also?)

Some people wanted to get a file so that they could get an idea on how this was going to work .
There is no file for this month . Maybe next .

Yes but I can't see doing both with Terragen challenge being so short this month and all the confusion on who does what .
You guys do whatever affraid this is all to confusing so not entering this month challenge or participating in collaboration. Just is not enough time for everything.
sorry guys if you still need the file hosted that is still okay just can't do any more, with so many questions still to be be resolved, plus all the other challenges going on. Just isn't right.

As this time it would have been too much time consuming, as the contest was already late due to my vacations, we didn't have time to do the "ter" business. NOTE that I had already stated this in this thread!
I do appreciate A LOT all of the offerings, and YES, if you wish to try and share ter files to play with and use in the contest there is absolutely no problem (but just give credit for the terrain to its creator, when you upload your image ;) )!!! Use whatever terrain you like. Maybe I'll add one of mine to the lot, too :)

hmmm since the winner of the contests gets to name the next contest theme, why not let them upload one of their own terrains, to use with the next contest. :headbang:

Hi Sass,Carolyn and Robert have space on their websites.
Think you must send the files to them, and than we can download from their sites.
and if we can download from your site ,put just a link from your site where we can download it.
Maby Rev open a thread where you can put the links?

So for this challenge we can use what we want see tha above,
If the next winner give a terrain file think we use only that.
But for the fun we can take one terrain (Collaboration work)

Question on these files.. I only have the free version and it won't take a certain size of world terrain are all these you are posting small enough for the free version?

@wile1: I think that the free version can handle bigger files if you import them!

Yes, the free version can import any dimension of .ter, but cannot generate them bigger than 513 square.
Have fun with my ter!

I have comcast cable.. it very very very rarely goes down as it is a big corporate hog of a company LOL! but if one of you wishes to do a mirror thats fine :-) i also have lots and lots of space there so whatever i upload to it will probably still be there in 2010 haha
i will be sharing lots more terrains with all the trimmings here and will probably start a new thread called sassterrains soon... :-)
huggs to all, tax season is gearing up and its all i can do after work to make three new pictures for ya'll every day heeee heeeeee..

Yes! Sass, we could use a new sticky thread with a continuously updated lists of terrain links on your site (wow, thanks for the space and time!) complete with the dimension of the terrain and its builder (which will be mostly you, but I will surely contribute, and maybe someone else!). When you are ready make one, and I will stick it!
