This kind of modelling is a technique to build up unorganic or organic shapes - if there is any interes I would post a little step-by-step to build up a tiny dragon out of a simple box - let me know!

Fine! But we may have a little problem yet... I know that most of you are using Vue or Bryce and this programs are great programs but imo not very helpful if you wanna learn some modeling skills... If you want to model something you have to use a program were you can do the basic modelling like extrude, bevel, vertice tweaking and so on. I know too that most of the programs are expensive or people think that the learning curve is too high.
First is right for the most of the programs but there are a few free programs like blender and wings 3d - but there are demoversions for free (for example Maya L(earning)E(dition) - Maya is overboarding and imo not for beginners). I have seen the full version of Cinema 4D 6 on different magazine CD's and you could get the actual demoversion of Cinema 4D surfing to Maxon. During the last years I've tried different programs and I must say that Cinema 4D is the best program to start with. I will take a look if I can find a magazine CD with this 6er free version on it - I would upload it on my webspace for you if there is any interest.
Let me know.

I have the demo 9 for Cinema 4D - use to have one that let you save your models - 9 doesn't .
I would be happy to get a full working copy of 6 . Think I had it a while back on an other computer .
I think you should do your demo and then others could see how it done - I would love to see how you dio it . I don't care what program you use . I all ways learn some thing new .

Um... I have done a box model head before but the chances of me writing up a tutorial for it are rather slim at the moment. Sorry.
I was taught that once you learn modelling in one program, the procedures are much the same for it in other programs. The commands might have different names but the process is still much the same. If you stick with using boxes and circles to do your modelling tutorial Robert, and only use simple things like slice/cut, move etc. most people should be able to translate the techniques into their own program. I have Vue and Lightwave, the demo of Maya (which I've never tried to experiment much with) and I think I saw a demo version of Bryce on here also at one stage. *wonders where it got to* If anyone has a question about a particular technique, we should be able to find the equivalent command for them on other 3d modelling software. :D

Lightwave at the moment. Can use Vue (a little), but really if you say, make a fork it won't matter what program it's in. Only what you want to use the fork for. :hungry:

Nice.
If you keep an eye out on Daz3d.com, you might catch Hexagon being offered for $1.99US. They do that every once in a while.
Blender is a pretty good free modeler( a little more advanced than Wings3D).
Box modeling tutorials are a dime a dozen on the web. Pretty easy to learn no matter which application you are using. Just 'Divide and Conquer'. I prefer poly modeling myself...and Nurbs modeling if I really need something to have an organic look to it.

Currently I am using some of Dan Ablan's DVD Tutorials,
www.3dgarage.com
I am starting from beginning level and working my way up. So far I am AMAZED at the power of LightWave version 9. It is completely stable and it is very quick to render on my DualCore Computers, that is something that niether Bryce nor Vue can do, both are slow and when pushed hard will crash and I like to push software HARD :D Currently in LightWave I am modeling the Crate and texture it also. It is really good to see you back. This site is not the same without you!!!!

Thanks, Marc
please open a new thread and show us your 'crate' - now I have a DualCore E6700 too and I love the higher speed!! My grafic card is a GeForce 8800 GTX and thats enough for the moment... ;)
at the moment I want to learn more about ZB 3 (stunning new possibilities) and Cinema 4D r 10.1
Boxmodelling is imo a great first step using 3D programs and with the launch of the new photoshop cs3 extended you can do a bunch of new things with obj-files or 3ds-files as well.

I love Lightwave! My favourite 3d program. mind you, haven't tried that many others... Vue is pretty but I've not really pushed it... I have ZB3 at wortk to play with when I get the chance though...
