View Full Version : Terragen Error report?

All of a sudden, I can't open Terragen. I have the free version 0.9.43 and every time I try to open it, I get the error message that it must now close.
I thought it was free for non commercial use? I read the liscence agreement - and while it did say that commercial users have a 30 day period after which it shuts down, it also said that non-commercial users may use it as long as they want unless "Vendor" decides to "turn it off" so to speak.
Anybody know anything about this? It was working just fine a few days ago. And I'm pretty sure I've had it longer than 30 days, besides which I never would have said it was for commercial use, as it's not.
The only thing I can think of in the last few days is a Windows Update 8automatic) that came through, but I don't know what that would have to do with it.
Help?

You shouldnt be having this problem with the free version. Im sure you have rebooted to see if that helps..or have you downloaded anything new in the past couple of days...you can also try system restore if you are using windows xp..other than that, I would ulninstall, and dl the version of the terragen site and reinstall and try again..hope you get it up and running...sorry to hear that...good luck, Judee..

Also a file could have gotten corupted you might try uninstalling and reinstalling it if all of robins suggestions fail.

I have had that message before even on our registered version normally for me at least usually means I need to reboot .. I'm also wondering about your ram shouldn't take to much to run Terragen depends on other programs running in the background ..I think its happened maybe 2 times is all. Also some times if your Norton that can interfer.
I would certainly try what Robin suggested uninstall it and install a fresh new version.. Some times windows forgets where it puts things.
Good Luck:beerchug:

If everything else fails, write to support@planetside.co.uk (mailto:support@planetside.co.uk).
Anyway, if any files became corrupted you can try to reinstall. I doubt Terragen may have any incompatibilities with other programs. My computer has been overloaded of apps, from time to time, and still Tg works well!

Thanks for the suggestions - thus far nothing has worked.
Rebooting didn't help. Re-installing didn't help. I even completely uninstalled, re-downloaded, and then re-installed. Nope, same problem.
So I did a system restore back a few days - and that totally turned off my Virus Protection (McAfee) because it no longer had the new virus definitions, so I had to re-download them. I probably should have tried to see if Terragen was working before I re-installed the virus stuff, but I hate doing anything online or off when my comp is unprotected.
Anyway, I'm currently running ad-aware and will run spybot after that, just to check that there isn't anything bugging up the system.
If that doesn't work I guess I'll end up sending a report to planetside (thanks for the link, Rev)
Shoot!! :cries: I hate it when stuff doesn't work. I was looking forward to just relaxing this weekend, catching up with some gallery browsing and pixel play - not trying to figure out what's wrong.
Thanks for trying, anyway! I'll let you know if I get it running.

Hmmm, still no news... :disbelief
Rev, does it usually take several days to hear back? Of course, there was the weekend, so maybe that makes it seem longer.
Nothing I have tried works - and the weirdest of all - on the error message thing that says you have to shut down, there is always a more info button - and there is a notice of where a .txt report is recorded. Well, I go to the place it's supposed to be - the .txt error report - and there isn't one. (Hidden files showing) As for the extra info I can read it's all a bunch of numbers and terms that means absolutely nothing to me.
It's just so weird! I've really been wanting to give Terragen a good try - and no success.
Maybe it's The Powers That Be telling me to slow down and concentrate on fewer programs - learn the others before jumping into a new one.
Lol, that is the onely thing that makes sense in this, cause the inability to open the program makes no sense at all!
Oh well, guess I'll go play with Bryce...

judee sounds to me like if you are getting the error message of have to shut down you have a corrupt file or... perhaps some spyware or maybe even a virus. I don't know but usually when you get those errors thats usually a problem.
Try this.. Clean out everything you can, temp files etc. Run a virus scan and then run a spyware scan. Once you get everything cleaned up try again. If you still get the error the only thing left to do is delete everything having to do with terragen out of your program files and re install it. Or...
You could try using the thing where you set your machine back a few days to before the problem started.
If all else fails... reformat and reload.
Sorry you have problems also you need to know that sometimes they clear up on their own. I used to get these we have to close things on psp and it just seemed to clear up on its own, but I had run all the scans etc. Maybe it was a piece of spyware, don't know but it disappeared over night.

After you have uninstalled...be sure to check in ya programme files that its also taken out the terragen folders....if not...delete them manually. Also any temp files...delete.
Not sure if you are comfortable in the registry....but stuff does get left in there also and sometimes need to be manually deleted.
Then try a re-installl.
Also....did the windows update come in with an able to uninstall function...if so...try that also.

Judee what Graham said is true, it does leave a lot of garbage in the registry that should be cleaned out even then it would still be on the hard drive even if you did a restore only a F disk will come close to deleting it all.
If you need help on the registry I'm sure one of our Computer guys would be happy to list how it is done..... then retry if it still doesn't work, then I think your looking at a reformat.

Well, actually for the registry stuff, I didn't go into the registry but I ran a program called Registry First Aid which is supposed to clean out unused registry entries. (Ran it after uninstalling Terragen and before re-installing it fresh.)
It's not totally complete though - it only cleans what it considers to be safe - there were a number of errors mentioned in the yellow zone and even in the red zone - but not knowing enough about registry I left them alone. maybe I should try it again and see if any of those specifically mention Terragen, and get rid of them?
Also, about temp files - what is the best way to get rid of them? I run the XP program Clean Sweep (I think that's the name) and it is supposed to get rid of a lot of temporary files - but I've noticed if I go look in the files after, there are usually a number of files left.
The only reason I hate going back even further in the System Restore is that even though it says it doesn't take away saved data, it does take stuff away! Important stuff like virus definitions, recent windows updates, etc. And, lol, it even took away my icons I had replaced on my lower window tray! If it's the last resort I may try it again tho.
Unfortunately I don't have a whole lot of time to mess with this right now - my daughter's comp is so full of bugs it needs a whole re-format. She's a heavy user of msn - the communication part - she and her school friends yak on it every evening - and I am pretty sure she piickied up something there. She has weird toolbars and stuff all over - and her Favorites has a whole buch of new url's listed that she never put there - ang guess what? They cannot be deleted! By any means. (except of course, the one I will apply today.) Don't know how all that stuff got by - she does have antivirus (Norton) and Spy-Bot, which has a screen with it. Must have been something that got by before the definitions were out - and apparently is resistable to cleaning.
I digress, lol, sorry, got off on another track. Anyway, when I finish fixing my daughter's pc I'll tackle this again - and who knows maybe by then I will have heard from planetside.
Thanks all for trying to help! I'll try and re-try all of your suggestions when I get time. Hugs to each of you!!
