animations act weird in thumbnails

Nearly all my posts are gif animations. When I post them into the general gallery the 'thumbnails' act weird- flicker, get, white patches etc yet the final images in my gallery are as I intended. Is there a way around this? I am not very unternet savy and cannot find instructions here
