Adaptive Equalization plugin implements a technique for increasing
the local contrast of images by reducing overall dynamic range.
It is particularly useful for making small surface marks visible, or
revealing detail in shadow areas, while preserving color information.

The plug-in can be used with Adobe Photoshop 5, 6, 7, or CS
and Image Pro Plus 4.2 and 4.5 for both 8 bit per channel and
16 bit per channel grayscale, RGB, and LAB color images,
and with many other Photoshop-compatible programs for
8 bit per channel images.

I also use this plugin, it's a bit drastic, you have to dampen it a lot but can be very efficacious. with certain tunings it gives an image resembling old (very old!) oil paintings. I've used it to simulate them (paintings) appended to walls or so... rokko
