I guess this means us new guys are limited to about 4 images in our gallery, real impressive..haha. I also got a notice after 4 uploads that my memory allotment has been exceeded. Does that also mean the folks here with several hundred posts will have to wean out their galleries? :crutch:

I thought it was just me, but everyone seems to be having problems. This site has no advertising and doesn't seem to sell anything, so I imagine the owners are footing the bill for the server and upload space out of pocket--talk about a selfless act of patronizing the arts! They are to be commended on a super job so far... I sure hope they get this straightened out, but if not, it was fun while it lasted.

I thought about deleting some stuff to make room for new stuff, but I'm too afraid I won't be able to upload anything at all, so I'll just hang back a while and hope for the best.

As I said earlier today - be patient!! We have to wait for the Admin of IT to come in and sort this out- he is a busy man who does a day job aside from running this site, which as flite2mars said in his post "so I imagine the owners are footing the bill for the server and upload space out of pocket" at this moment we dont know if this is a deliberate act, a mistake on someone's part or a glitch in the system, so please be patient until we get an answer - and yes - the answer will be posted.

I was just checking out something that someone said earlier in this thread and if you go to your User CP and then look at the options down the left side of the page - under Miscellaneous you will find Subscriptions - I clicked the link and it said "Premium Membership
Premium Membership
This premium membership will allow you access to increased gallery space as wel as increased number of daily uploads. There will be additional benefits as the administration adds them " and the yearly price for this is $12.99.

So all I can think of at the moment is that perhaps Admin intends the reduced gallery limit as a way to get people to buy this new membership. I assume that some sort of announcement was meant to be made at the same time as this reduced gallery limit came into being and something went wrong - I am only guessing here though, as we have still not been told anything officially. So please don't quote me on this one.

Everybody please Calm down and be patient...if the site has slowed for a period till it gets sorted out, then, we are all fairly mature and will need to just wait till it is...soon someone will have the answers we need and so taking guesses, as to what the problem might be, can be counter productive and seems to be an emotion causing issue..So I ask for patience and I'm sure the difficulty will be sorted soon....sometimes running a site can be a very bumpy ride...fasten your seat belt and hang on....This is the the part of the movie where it says "TECHNICAL Difficulties...Please Stand By"....DragonWizard.....

Our sincere apologies to everyone who's been affected by this incident, and it seems like it's been quite a few people. It's a pity that a few people have thought it necessary to delete their galleries, I hope this means you won't consider uploading images to them any more, because it would be a shame to lose you.

As soon as we have an answer, you can be assured that we'll post it pronto, so in the meantime all that remains is for us to sit back and wait until that is. I'm sorry that this is the best explanation we have to offer at this time, we're all just as much in the dark as you. Hopefully, we'll all be enlightened soon.

Edit: what did I say? ;) It was just a glitch that wasn't meant to occur, hope all is well now.

So it looks like "Unlimited Space" is a thing of the past and the new rule is 20 megs...still a good deal for free, but now for the really hard part: deciding which of my masterworks has to go in order to make room for new stuff.

"Unlimited Space" seemed an unrealistic thing from the get-go, so I wasn't really counting on it lasting forever. I love the international flavor of this site and the fact that it isn't flooded with pompous loud-mouthed Americans like me. Thanks to this site, I now have "fans" all over the world! Again, my apologies for my president and my country. Now excuse me while I go kill some old files and upload some new ones. Peace.

(PS--If I decide to purchase the $12.99 subscription, exactly how much space do I get, and how many uploads per day? There doesn't seem to be a clear answer anywhere...)

It is good that people are finding out what some of the plans for this site are gonna be

Al tho 20 MB is a lot of free room for 3D art and photography, it is rather tight for the musicians at IT :cries:

It means an upload of 4 - 5 tracks, depending on the compression. Maybe the Admin can figure out a way to extend the limit for music and animation :reading:

@ flite2mars; I wish you strength at deleting some of your musical offspring :waffen093 I hope we soon get some insight information from Admin about the $12,99 subscription

Well, I'm 11 megs over my 20 meg limit, but all my files still seem intact, so I'm not going to delete anything until we get some solid answers.

@hyper -- Indeed, 20 megs isn't much for those of us posting music. It is a shame to say that IT will become far less useful to many of us if this limit is imposed indefinitely. Hard to figure out what is really going on here...it sure doesn't smell like a glitch out of the blue...

Now it has more of a Twilight Zone feel...perhaps aliens have taken over this site, and this is all some strange kind of test on the minds of human artists?

Franko
23rd September 2004, 17:48
Im happy about the 20MB limit - so the music-artists are forced to pack thier songs as little files - there was a song of 7000kb - i do not load such big files down - (my good old modem is very slow) and i think that the idea of a Song is important, not the sound - if i want to have a better sound i could ask the musican for a link to a better Version.

The Admin has some great inspireing ideas - so i will forget the mysterious 750/200 Mistake and so i take a look to the future -

but hey Admin: please do not more of those mistakes - my heart is a little bit sensitive

 Sorry to hear about your logos disappearing, Sky, as well as your internet connection possibly going as well. Here's hoping that something will work out for you, and in the event that you do disappear for a while, that it's not for long and you return to find things just as they were when you left.

We're all coping with the new limitations on disk space, and while it is something of an issue for those of us wanting to upload sound and animations, I think for now we're just going to have to find a way to deal with it. One thing I intend to try is converting all my animations to 320x240 .wmv files and seeing how they turn out and how much quality is lost in the process. If it's not too bad I'll end up replacing all the current ones with the smaller files.

If anyone needs any help in doing this, let me know and I'll talk you through the process.

flite2mars
23rd September 2004, 23:43
Hey Franko, are you for some reason pissed at me for uploading a file of 7 megs? The song (A Tribute to Tony Williams Lifetime--in my gallery) was almost 7 minutes long, about a meg a minute--and I didn't try to milk any part of it--the song worked out to almost 7 minutes so that's that.

I thought "unlimited space" meant exactly that--I was NOT trying to abuse this gallery in any way. I also use a dial-up modem. If the size of the file bothers you, don't bother downloading it. But I see no point in compressing an Mp3 to the point of noise simply to satisfy someone's impatience over download speeds. I compress at 128 kbit stereo, which I think is reasonable. True, the uncompressed .wav file sounds a bit better, but the difference is minimal, and I believe the compression ratio gives the best compromise of quality vs. file size.

Don't blame the musicians/composers for using up space here, especially when we were told it is unlimited and unrestricted. If the owners or moderators have a problem with me, I'll happily fade back into obscurity. I still think the owners are doing a fine job (even with a 20 meg restriction), but they should come forward and state that all this nonsense was no glitch--someone was just trying to make a buck in a sinister way (if I'm wrong, then I'm wrong and I apologize), but I smell an opportunist lurking about...

Let's just cut out all this crap and get back to the work of art and music.

Rumour

As far as I know, the 750k limit/200k file size limit was just a glitch in the system, nothing more than that. Admin did post an apology to that effect.

Also, to answer your earlier question on how much space the subscribed membership would be... we don't know yet, as this hasn't come into effect. Once it is, I'm sure there'll be more on it, explaining how much space you get for your money. ;)

Franko
24th September 2004, 06:27
Hey flite i dont piss on you - i only wanted to say that the sound of an mp3File is not important for ME - and that MY modem is so slowly that iam not interested to load a song for half an hour (i have to pay for Internet-minutes a lot) so i am no public for you with your big monsterfiles - and i know that you wont load a "NoiseyTrashSong" of 8 MB from my Galery.
- but the most users have a fast connection i think and so it dosent matter for you if I hear your songs or not
But i hear if a song is compressed to 16kbit Mono if the song is great or only a poor piece of crap (in MY ears) - a perfect sound could not be realy helpful to an ugly composition. (And a 64kbit compression is ok too - for ME.)

Ok the Admin is not a very good Talkmaster - but i see the sence of paying for an membership (without an adminexplanation) - and a 20MB Freespace is more than ok i think - also i think that members that wants to load very big files have to arrange with this 20MB or have to buy an Membershipcard - Space is expensive and who of us has to give away anything
And i think it is clear (wie Klossbrühe) that a paying member will have much more Space as the users.

The Admin has just to talk a little bit more to explain it

flite2mars
24th September 2004, 10:40
OK, Franko, it's cool. I understand all your points. But for me, sound quality is almost as important as the song itself. I put a lot of work into the stereo aspects of a song, so reducing it to mono is an option I try to avoid.

I enjoy a "Noisy Trash Song" now and then, and I went right to your gallery to see if I could download a long one, but you cleared it out. I have listened to a few of your songs and enjoyed them. I LIKE your music and I like you too, man. Our musical styles are radically different, but those differences keep life interesting.

You said, ..."a perfect sound could not be realy helpful to an ugly composition,"--and I totally agree. On the other hand, I feel that a perfect composition can be destroyed by ugly sound quality. Not that my compositions are perfect, but I think I've explained my point. Or do you want to fight about it??? :duel: ---Relax. Just kidding, man. By the way, can you translate "(wie Klossbrühe)" for me?

As for all this upload space business being the result of a glitch: I don't believe in accidents or coincidences, but it is possible someone just screwed up. I didn't notice the apology, but I accept it. It is still most gracious of whomever owns this site to do what he/she is doing--giving away free space to artists and musicians whithout so much as a single ad or banner to dull our senses. I'm sorry for the "sinister" comment and insinuating that this was some sort of scam--it did seem that way for a moment, but given all the good points of this site and the administration, I see I was way off the mark.

I just love debates and confrontation and biting the hand that feeds me, and I'm not afraid to admit when I'm wrong, which I often am.

Our tech expert reduced this memory size without telling me. Everyone should have about 1.5 gigs of space now. I think that should be enough. The upload limit is still 2 per day -- at least for the present time. But, frankly, I may reduce that to one per day the way other free sites have.

Sorry about the scare, but people really should check first before deleting all their pictures. Jeeez! That kind of shows a sense of despair and desperation, like "I have know power, so I'm leaving."

So Franko - The upload limit is still 2 per day at least for the present time - meaning that it may change, as stated, to 1 per day in the future - but you will be informed if and when it is going to change. Also about deleting pictures, people thought they had to delete in order to make room for new pictures, despite the Mods requesting patience, people still went ahead and deleted entire galleries. Perhaps in future (if anything like happens) people will remember this incident and just hang on for a while we try and sort the problem out - remember it takes time, we cannot just do it in the blink of an eye. The impossible we do almost at once, miracles may take a little longer. ;)

Is this the new limit?

If so, how come some artists I see with at least two uploads at a time, while myself and others only have one?

I understand what you are saying but I think it is telling you you have reached your upload limit because the previous image you posted must have been less than 24hrs - You are allowed 2 per 24hrs - so for instance if you uploaded yesterday one image at 10am and one at 2pm, at 10am this morning you will only be able to upload 1 image as your 2nd post yesterday was only 20hrs previously. I am afraid that is how the system works - it is not 2 uploads per day but per 24hrs and the system sort of time's them. Which is why most artists - myself included, upload 2 images at the same time. This is the only reason that you are getting this message - I can assure you that you ARE allowed 2 uploads per 24hrs. There is no glitch in the system and you are not being singled out.

That's a thought, but not the case, I am certain of it. For three days now, I waited until past the time of my previous ONE upload, it allowed me to post one upload, then I got the message again. In three days, I haven't deleted anything to change the time line of the postings/uploads, so it is simply only allowing me one upload.

Can't you somehow check the records or my account to see what was posted and at what time?

I swear, I'm telling you the truth!!!! LOL :)

Love,

Reg

Have you tried your 2 uploads today? Have you had the same problem?. If so I will certainly look into the problem a bit more deeply - But as I said i did check the upload limit per member and it is set at 2. Let me know if the problem is solved or not.

Just as a wild guess since I don't know computers that well and this is just one of those things on my list of things to try randomly if things aren't working right... Have you tried clearing out your cache and deleting unwanted cookies?

Okay, first to Engel..my last ONE upload was last night at approximately 10:30 EST. It would not let me upload a second then, but I'll try it again in a moment to see if it works. If it doesn't, I will assume that I have to wait until that time or past it to be able to upload again, and then I will see if I can do one, or two...and let you know at that time.

And to Rumour....deleting cookies I have admittedly not done in awhile, because whenever I do that, it screws up my settings, like if I go on a site, I'll have to log in again, where usually I am automatically logged in by default. Sometimes I don't remember my exact user name and password, so I avoid deleting cookies except when it's absolutely necessary.

I'm not having any kind of problems on other sites with anything that would make me have to delete cookies, but if the "problem" persists after my upload time at 10:30 EST, I will give that a try, PRAY that it solves the problem, and just deal with having to re-find sites and re-log in to everywhere again..LOL

And thanks...

Love,

Reg

I have that exact same problem, Sky, can be a pain in the behind. As such I've taken to manually deleting those cookies I don't recognise as sites I frequently visit. Alternatively you can just try deleting the IT cookies.

Thanks Rumour!! :)

Okay, I just now uploaded one image...it would not allow me last night when I uploaded the 10:30 EST one, but for some reason, it did allow me one, but just the one, right now.

If I'm still online by 10:30 EST tonight, I will try to upload the second, if it still doesn't work, then obviously something is all screwy with my settings on this site, or my pc, or whatever, but something just isn't working right if the second won't go through later on....

But I'm still happy to have been able to upload my new one just a minute ago..

Thanks again,

Love,

Reg

OK - Glad to know you have uploaded an image ;-) as you say you uploaded at 10.30 last night try again at 10.31 and see if you can upload your 2nd image - I think you are about 7 hrs behind the Netherlands as it is now 01.20 Friday morning here - so I am off to bed. Hope your 2nd upload goes allright :D

Thank you again Engel!

I will attempt it again after that time later tonight...

I just also wanted to let you know that a couple of other people said they saw these messages, and told me in IM that they also can only upload one per 24 hours....I told them they should post that so you can be informed of the magnitude of the technical problem, and see that it's not just me, or my pc!! LOL :) But again, I'll try again later, and if it works, I just won't say anything. If it doesn't work, I'll post and let you know, ok?

Thanks very much,

Love,

Reg

Okay, at pretty much exactly 10:38 pm, EST, I was able to upload a second image!!! :)

Thank goodness and thank you for taking the time to respond and look into it.

I don't know why for three days I couldn't do it, but I guess now it's okay, just different upload times.

Thanks again,

Reg

as all the upload problems of recent days have now been resolved - this thread is now being closed. Thanks for the input. :sprint:
