1st Visual Arts Challenge is opened!
Theme of our 1st Competition: Trees, Leaves and Foliage
Medium: Dry Medium
The autumn is coming and soon the trees will be bare again. Unless, of course, you happen to live in Southern Hemisphere and for you it is the other way around. I thought that this is a good time to celebrate the beauty of foliage while it lasts.
Artworks made with dry mediums (pencil, color pencil, dry pastels or charcoal) and featuring trees and other vegetation are eligible. Mixed media using ones listed above is allowed.
Challenge begins August 15, 2006 and ends September 21, 2006. Voting will go from September 22 until September 25. Results will be announced later, after September 25th, 2006.
Terms and conditions:
1. Only one piece of Art per user
2. Your Entry Artwork must be complete during last three years.
3. Your art is not allowed to post at same moment of time on other public site until our challenge will be over.
4. Please post your Entry in the Traditional and Fine Art Challenge Gallery.
5. You must accept one condition: if you participate in current challenge, it means that you must vote! This is a common courtesy to your fellow artists, who have also entered the challenge and who vote.
6. NO Nudity allowed in challenge artworks.
Each of you has only 4 days to give your Vote using next scheme:
1) “Image Title”- “Name”- 5 points
2) “Image Title”- “Name”- 3 points
3) “Image Title”- “Name”- 1 point
F.Y.I.
Everyone will be allowed to vote the 5-3-1 points
You Do Not Have To Enter To Vote
BUT IT WOULD BE NICE IF YOU DID
Any digitally enhanced work is NOT allowed. You need to make a scan (or Photo) of your artwork and that is all for what is possible to use a computer.
Breaking these simple rules means removing your Entry from current challenge.
Good Luck to all participants!:airborne:

You could always take a digital photo of it perhaps? Can you ask someone who has a digital camera if you can borrow it?

It's always the same when it's something that needs time to do it, but you have at least opened it for art completed in the last 3 years, so hopefully some people will display their works here! It's a great theme, as I said, and so it may have the extra appeal about it.

Just a question that I did not see an answer to in the rules. Is it allowed for people to use their Wacom or other 2D art tablet???
I do not have one, I am just asking for those who do :)!!!

art created with paint, pencil .....as the great masters used to do before computers.
I think no Wacom or other 2D art tablet just pencil, color pencil, dry pastels or charcoal....

No, artworks made with Wacom or other tablet are not allowed. This is a traditional art contest. The only digital technology involved can be a scanner or a digital camera you use to get an image of your work. No digital enhancements (Photoshop filters and effects, etc.) are allowed as well.

I have a question... you say no photoshop filters are allowed, and that is fair enough, I am wondering though.... since I do pencil work, a lot of the shading is very fine and my scanner doesn't always pick it up. However if I have several layers multiplied on top of each other it makes it look more like the original and you see the finer detail. Will you allow this?
If you say no, it's fair enough. I can just kick the crap out of my scanner for being useless instead. :p :lachen001

I, too have a question..
About pencils!
I'm going to give this a go but the only colored pencils I have are all water-soluble and I can't afford to make another purchase now. However, I can still do it with these and simply not wet them.
The question I have is, what can you suggest as a really good dark black pencil? Graphite is hopeless, charcoal too smudgy.. Do you have any suggestions? (and of course it has to be a make that I can get over here in the UK! lol!)

My answer is: The best dark pencil for me belongs to set of Faber Castle. So you can find this brand everywhere, for example on DickBlick.com
Another variant: as to me I often use a Staedtler Mars Lumograph Pencils, which possible to find in any store of stationery (here in US this is something like a Staples).
I hope it helps.

I'm so very sorry but I got an image part way done, and literally haven't had time to complete it. It also made me remember why I stopped doing traditional art! The amount of concentration it demands, doing lots of repetitive work and so on, and ensuring I don't make a bad mistake, really drains all the energy out of me - and that doesn't take much doing with the disability I have! My only other foliage-type images are pen and wash! Not quite what this contest demanded! lol!
