Yes its very sad indeed. But he died doing what he loved to do the best. Working with animals.. animals of any kind, wet or dry. He loved it. aNd he taught us all to respect animals. He really was a great person. He will be missed. My condolences to his lovely wife Terry and the kids and his family.

He was good at what he does but in my opnion he didnt respect animals...not all the time. Its a shame that he lost his life the way he did and so young....
But stuff like this peeves me off...big style!!
You dont grab a venomous snake by its tail and go "ooo she's pissed now"for the sake of public entertainment. It makes me angry when people do that, knowing they're risking their lives, even tho' he had 2 small kiddies and a wife to think of. His wife was more respectful to animals than he ever was.
He had it coming to him unfortunately...you dance with the devil too many times your bound to come unstuck.....
Its his children i feel sorry for having to grow up without a dad. *sighs*
Sorry..... just bugs me this kinda of thing:eyepoppin

I agree... Steve Irwin was the most annoying thing to ever grace our TV screens...

BUT... the side of him that many never saw was his constant work to save our environment. He used most of his earnings to buy up huge tracts of land to stop them being grabbed by developers - thus preserving them for the wildlife that live on them...

He set up "Wildlife Warriors" to allow the public to assist in these conservation efforts... http://www.wildlifewarriors.org.au/ - I'd suggest that even if you hated everything you saw this man do, it would be a fitting tribute to his cause to donate something to it...

I have...

The kids thought he was great... I didn't like his antics one little bit...

I've swum with stingrays myself - the first thing you learn is to never approach them from above and behind... and the smartest thing to do when you see one is to swim in the other direction... lol!

He was definitely reckless when it came to handling dangerous animals...

He most probably grabbed the ray to keep it in camera view as he had done so many times before. Sorry to say this but he did have it coming!! What goes around comes around! I, too, am sorry for the lovely family he left behind.
RIP

a beautiful family left..that is the tragedy...and tv is pushing these shows to the limit...use to be you could sit back and watch and enjoy the nature scenes and animals..now..if you dont stick your head in the croc's mouth..you dont get on the air...
yes, he was reckless, and he paid the price for it...and so has his family..very sad news..
Lesson: If you mess with nature..ultimately it will win...:meditate:

It was a tragic accident - and he will be missed.
The one thing that he did have was an enthusiasm and a devotion to the Australian wildlife in particular.

I think we have to remember that he had been brought up with dangerous animals most of his life and even as a young child he used to go out with his father to catch crocodiles and other animals including poisonous snakes. I don't think he was any less aware of the danger in handling these animals but I do think that he had a confidence that came from time with them. I think he had far more respect for the animals that he worked with then most people realise.

To the best of my knowledge and from the reports we have been seeing over here he was not touching the ray - nor was he too close to it.

I just want to reiterate that he was a well loved character over here - probably one of the richest people in Australia but the money he made went back into conservation and the zoo that his father had started.

Definitely too close... the thing stuck it's 20cm barb through his chest, remember?

Australia lost 4 great characters last week...

Don Chipp - former leader of our Democrat party - famous for his quote "keep the b@stards honest" in relation to holding the balance of power in our Senate.

Colin Theile - author of the book "Storm Boy" (and others)

Steve Irwin - nuff said.

Peter Brock - Australia's most loved race car driver.

All will be missed!

Yes, but don't forget they were both moving. what I am saying is that the reports are that he did not intentionally go too near.

reports are that he did not intentionally go too near.
Hahaha! That would be a first...

Of course he was too near to the stingray - he was following it (read chasing it) - and that is something that one really should not do. If a stingray is swimming AWAY from you, it DOESN'T want you to follow it, and WILL strike at you if you do...

The poison in a stingray's barb is not normally fatal to adult humans - but if the barb pierces your heart (as in this case) - well...

Totally freak incident - but by no means an "accident"...
