View Full Version : Important for GIF animators

There have been a few problems in the gallery as a result of animation uploads, the site "programmer" has looked into this and has said the following (in the questions/problems/suggestions forums if you want to read the full thread - under "problems seeing the main gallery"):

Gif's upload fine if it is a gif image.

However you can not upload an animated gif over 199 pixels wide or tall.

The reason being is an animated gif is made up of many frames like a multimedia file.

Once you upload an animated gif over 200pixels the image processor creates a thumbnail which will be distorted and this can not be corrected in any way but to delete the image.

An animated gif is an image not a multimedia file hence we can not treat it as a multimedia file and bypass the thumb creation image processing part.

So there you go folks, if uploading an animated gif please make sure that the image size falls into this guideline.

Thank You, IT Admin.

Let's see if the jpg problem clears up somehow....If some one could look into this also...maybe I should review the threads and see if this is helping..

Thanks Angela I know some are concerned on size's when being on dial up I do know depending on the program I used to be able to upload an image not animated then animated when viewing.. wondering if we could actually refer people here who do animations....just for the sake of a refresher or the rules.

What about an animation not made as a gif what size is the largest you want and what weight size or kb size???

GIF issues/rules aside. What other formats are available for animation posts? I realize FLC/FLI would probably have exactly similar issues as GIF. How about mpegs/mpgs? I see people are loading mp3's in the sound section! The file types are virtually the same. Or QuickTime movies? Since mp3's here can play sound so wonderfully, I assume that sound will not be an issue, but I am curious if these other formats (If they are allowed) will be subject to the same thumbnail annomolies? I hope someone will answer my question, as I would love to post more animations. I want to be a good citizen!

I just read ClassyLadys question, I dont think that size (KB) wise they should have any different limitation than the still images. So far that seems to be on an honor system. No one should abuse that.

I have uploaded mpg's, avi's amd mov files before without any issue. When you do that, you are able to upload a still thumbnail on your work (I usually pick an image that's interesting, or you could do a picture of the title of your animation) to be displayed in the gallery. You don't have the same issues as with a gif because it's usually a jpg or something that's uploaded.

Size I think is limited to 30M. I'm not sure how many people have actually uploaded something so large, I think a few might have, but I tend to stick to the principal that if you want a lot of people to look at your work, the smaller the filesize, the better. Lot of people won't wait 10-15 minutes to upload a really large file, and if you're on a dial up connection it can be even longer. Not everyone has cable or broadband.

Sorry I didn't get back to you Digiman I haven't been on the net today till now and yes everything rumour says is true I used to upload using Microsfot story book and also windows movie maker and yes you can upload a jpeg for the thumb nail. I used normally what the first image was or whatever you want to make up regarding what is in the movie. to tell you the truth I did not like windows movie maker it tends to crash a lot and I'm running 3 megs of ram. along with 2 120 s and 3 80 gig HD's not at the same time some are portable ones. just running the basic 1 120 and 1 80 it still crashed . besides on that one you can not set the music to it without tons of work that is why personally I do like the Story book 3 you can add your own music however it does have a list of those you can use. without having to spend time makng the windows movie maker music able to stop at the end of the finishing movie

Unfortunately I have not found a free one I like I've tried many and they all have some type of faults that I personally did not care for....

But if you ever run across one that is free or nearly free please list the link to it.

Now I did run across one called KnotBlot which is free for no commerical usage right now I can not find the link so I'll just post an image with there info on it .. it is an interesting program and you may like it. we just don't use it much with all the other programs we use.. good luck
There are a lot Fractal programs that you can make avi's with I don't think any of mind were much over 5 megs most 3 to 5 megs because what rumour said is true so many people that are on dial up just can not upload it let alone get to it. problem is most people here can not view them mainly because they work off of windows xp with Media 6 or higher... but check them out they are both on the Microsoft download site. or check out the links in the fractal forum those are listed here (http://www.innertraveler.com/messagecenter/showthread.php?t=1011) the link to try first is the one at the bottom or first posted by Engel47 it is oneof the best sites that can direct you to tons of fractal programs that do avi's.... Enjoy

You may all notice some larger animations being uploaded during the next week, please bear with us whilst the mods try out the "new" system to see if larger animations can be uploaded without disturbing the galleries :) Once that has been done an announcement will be made :bounce:
