View Full Version : Important for GIF animators

There have been a few problems in the gallery as a result of animation uploads, the site "programmer" has looked into this and has said the following (in the questions/problems/suggestions forums if you want to read the full thread - under "problems seeing the main gallery"):
"Gif's upload fine if it is a gif image.
However you can not upload an animated gif over 199 pixels wide or tall.
The reason being is an animated gif is made up of many frames like a multimedia file.
Once you upload an animated gif over 200pixels the image processor creates a thumbnail which will be distorted and this can not be corrected in any way but to delete the image.
An animated gif is an image not a multimedia file hence we can not treat it as a multimedia file and bypass the thumb creation image processing part".
So there you go folks, if uploading an animated gif please make sure that the image size falls into this guideline.
Thank You, IT Admin.

Sorry if I am being a bit thick - not sure I understand. This person at Rendo - Leda Moon - she/he is telling folk at Rendo that it costs money to join Innertraveler?
Just searched Poser Forum at Rendo - nothing found on Leda Moon.

No, no, no...lol
She just told ME, in IM, on Renderosity IM that is, after I "invited" her over here, she told me she tried but it said what she said, the comments I posted earlier, they were a copy/paste of an IM she sent to me...don't think she's going aroung announcing something like that to everybody.
I told her I'd ask about it and see why that should be, that's all...

I'll resend her the link for here, and tell her to try it again, because that shouldn't of happened, that this is a free site, and maybe she got the wrong link by accident or something..
I haven't (in all honesty), been to Renderosity yet tonight. I'm busy trying to decipher someone's half english/german emails...lol, someone cute...lol ;)

Hello Engel, I'm new to this site and forum, but it already seems to me that you guy's run a great site!
I read abbout your policy regarding GIF animations. I have no doubt that what you say is true. I have seen other sites deal with a wide range of solutions. Renderosity allows users to upload tiny thumbnails seperate. From what I gather, here you do not. I know that mnartists.org does not either, they automatically generate a thumbnail from the actual media file (How I'm not sure) They may not use the same tools/software that you use here. But They are able to get a "Still" thumbnail, somehow, from the medial file they let you upload. I only am putting this out there as an FYI, not trying to tell you how to run your site! :beerchug:
Keep up the great work! Now I think I'll go post something!

It's not a matter of allowing people to upload thumbnails, the software we use means that we're unable to offer to let people upload their own - unless you're uploading something non image - a sound file or a piece of writing for example. We'd love to offer this ability, but with the current format (not something we set up) it's not possible. :(

Hi Rumour! Thanks for the info. I am new to this site, and my real passion is animations! I woul love to post some here, but I'm running into real barriers. The 199 pixel size limit, pretty much destroys that option. I tried shrinking one down that small, it looked terrible. I can post QT mov's, but I can't seem to make them loop! And looping is very critical to my animations.. :( I use a Macintosh, if that is any help? I would appreciate any help from the experts. Thanks.

Can you be more specific? Are these Gif animations you are trying to upload? I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean about the 199 pixel size limit, because unless someone has changed some settings (and it sure wasn't me) you can upload much larger pictures than that. Unless you are talking about thumbnails?

Hi Rumour, it was my understanding from what I read, that there could be no animated GIF's over 199 pixels in size. As per the top of the thread. I have been making many of my animations into GIF's, for other galleries. I can make the mov's, avi's etc... but then I have to figure out the loop thing.

Digimon you are quite correct - sorry I did not see your post sooner. Our tech guy set a size limit some time ago for animations - he said "However you can not upload an animated gif over 199 pixels wide or tall" That being said there is no actual file size limit - i.e in KB's.

Henry this is something we are looking into, but we certainly hope we can make a change to the size. As soon as we know for sure we will post an announcement. :)

You may all notice some larger animations being uploaded during the next week, please bear with us whilst the mods try out the "new" system to see if larger animations can be uploaded without disturbing the galleries :) Once that has been done an announcement will be made :bounce:

So does this mean on gif's we cannot upload a thumb nail???
Rumour
1st February 2006, 03:44
Carolyn, this means that with gifs you ARE able to upload a separate thumbnail. this should stop the problem of having the galleries not loading properly when someone uploads a gif animation.
Engel47
1st February 2006, 10:01
To add to what Rumour said - you can upload a seperate single image thumbnail yes, otherwise you just get that white square with the word Multimedia in red :)

Thanks Ava I'll give it a try later. I know with a thumb it will look nicer.

I can attest to Carolyn and Ron's abilities with Gifs! They do some awesome animations. She helped me so much to understand it using animation Shop! She is very experience and helpful. And thank you Angie for clarifying using a thumb to go with the animation file. I deleted most of mine in my gallery because it slowed the upload down.

Have we decided on a size I can go 800x600 I would imagine it will go a good 1 meg which I did resize down only because it is difficult to get into animation shop to 500x375 size is 825kb
If you want to test it let me know I have them all in one file but can not post again till late this evening my time.
I can always send it to you if you want the 825 kb one by the time it s zip and attached could go close to 1 meg. for sending.
just say the word it is just 4 fractals nothing additional just 4 images made in to a gif.
and Thanks Pat for the vote of confidence :) lol not sure how true it is but we did learn alot ...

Does that then mean as long as I post a small thumb along with it that I can post a gif ani over 199 pixels? I do post on Renderosity as laztspark because when I signed up I miss spelled my use name and didn't catch it until later. I do use a large image there either fixed or ani and a thumb along with it.
