View Full Version : Tutorial/Method for creating some funky Apophysis flames...

OK... here goes... text version only...
1. Open Apophysis. Open the Script editor, select New, and paste the following into the blank space...
Clear;
AddTransform;
AddTransform;
Run the script...
This will clear whatever is in the window, then add two very basic Linear transforms (triangles)...
2. Save the resulting (really basic looking) flame to a .flame file of it's own. I called mine "messingabout.flame"
3. Then open that .flame file in Notepad and delete one of the lines that starts with <xform weight= then Save the file.
4. Now open that .flame file in Apophysis... it will still look pretty boring - but you will have only ONE transform/triangle... and here it starts to get really funky...
5. Open your Editor window and select the Variation tab - see how it says Linear and 1? Change the Linear Value to 0 and set the Spherical Value to 10 (yes, 10)
6. Now go to your Options and select the Random tab. Set the values for Number of Transforms and Mutation Transforms to min = 2 and max = 2 - set Forced Symmetry to "None".
7. Then go to the Options/Variations tab and click on the "Clear All" button - then put a check ONLY in the Spherical checkbox. Click on OK to save your
settings...
8. Now open your Mutation window and move the speed slider down to about 0.05 and start clicking on the centre image...
Here's a flame that I made using the above method...
http://www.woosie.net/apophysis/messingabout.jpg
I encourage everyone to experiment with steps 5, 6, and 7 - see what funky stuff you all can come up with...
Edit: I would also like to credit datagram for the little 2 transform script - and ulli for sharing how to delete one transform from the .flame file. Thank you guys!

Please note that some people have had a go at me for publishing this method of creating flames like this from scratch... because the resulting flames appear to be similar in STYLE to flames that someone else published in some starter flame packs about a year ago...
As far as I know, the person who created those starter flame packs has never published how they made said starter flames - and thus cannot lay claim to anything that YOU may create using this method - NOR the method steps above.
I came up with this method by experimenting with some concepts that have been discussed lately in the Apophysis mailing list regarding single transform flames - steps 1 through 4 are from that public mailing list conversation. Steps 5 through 8 are what I came up with when playing around with that concept.
I have NOT scrutinised anyone else's flame parameters to "enhance" this method - just some hours of playing around in Apophysis based on a concept that is in the PUBLIC domain.
I also do NOT lay ANY claim on anything that others may create using this method... what you create is due to your own messing with the method - and is thus your own to lay claim to.

Update...
All unpleasantness regarding the flames created using this technique has been resolved amicably. Feel free to use this technique and experiment with it to your heart's content... and don't forget to share your results, or additions to the technique to make it better or whatever...

I've sat down and compiled a slightly easier layout tutorial for this method... you can find it at the following link...

Hopefully it will be easier to follow now.

Thanks I will try it again. Book marked the tutorial.
BTW Angie Rumour, is there some way to get some of these tutorials uploaded to this site instead of linking to our personal sites?

Yes - Post them as new message in the forum - in one that graphic intensive I would open a new thread called "whatever Tutorial" and do a new post for each image and explanation! Same as I did for the "using the forum" thread Here (http://www.innertraveler.com/messagecenter/showthread.php?p=5220#post5220) .

The reason I posted the tutorial as a link on my personal site was that I've posted the same tutorial to a number of places, and didn't want to have to redo it over and over again... I'm lazy that way... lol!

I don't think you have to be concerned about that particular person , as for the rest of us heck we already know what has happened in the past. well heck least they were not my starter flames I give all mine freely with no ties.well one lol just not to upload them to any site for give away freebees without our permission. Frankly doubt it many would even ask permission besides I do not make my sets with my original flame.
Thanks T for the info I'm sure much appreciated by all. :duel: :boogie:

Here are a couple of extra fun things to try with the technique...
In step 5, where it says to change the Spherical value to "10" - try using "-1.5" or "-0.5" (thanks to Ulli again for that tip!)
In step 6 - try changing the Maximum to 5 in the Mutation Transforms section.
In step 7 - check all of the following variations... Linear, Sinusoidal, Spherical, Hyperbolic, and Diamond.
In step 8 - set the speed slider to any number between 0.01, and 0.1 - and in the Trend box, select Random.
I guarantee you, you'll love some of the funky flames you'll get with those changes... lol!

This sounds so interesting....only for some reason my brain just won't lock on to what needs to be done here. So much for the high IQ. ROFL!!!!

Q.R.
Just print off the tutorial as you see it at the following link...
http://www.woosie.net/apophysis/funkytut/funkytut.htm
Run through it as it is explained in that tut...
Then do some experimenting with those steps I've noted above...
It will all fall into place pretty quickly, honest!

Woohoo, it was this script that I used when making my own flames! Unfortunately you need two transforms in order to clear what's already on the screen (I think I got that right - I know sometimes I got "Not enough transforms").
Well anyway, yes, playing around with the resultant one transform, changing its shapes, doing whatever.. Changing the vibrancy, gamma and other settings as well, all help to get different results. The of course, you can add more transforms if you wish. And the mutations are just fantastic of course!
Ugh! Arguments over others discovering same methods as certain other people did before them - if that's what they do on their own without reference to previous parameters - then I think all these sickening arguments should be dropped! There are many well known inventions that were made, to whom the credit never reached the first person who actually did do the invention! There is little justice, so let's just enjoy what we are able to do, is what I feel..
Anyway, this is all part of what I love about Apophysis!!!! It's very relaxing, almost like playing Solo or another game, but far more creative! lol!

well maybe T. can update us if there was any changes, as for the guy that was giving her a hard time I know him only to well as far as I am concerned he is, has and always will be a trouble maker. that is why I said when I give my starter sets it is simply because I want to and don't even claim or ask for any type of credit.... Some people give things with a motivite behind it for me I never do...... notice the date on this original thread I pulled it out of archive. so people could check it out again. Hoping T will update us if there is any changes. Sure would be nice to have it in a script form in a zip. that way it could go into the free area here. I know I have tried and tried to work with the z version and I just can not getthe details I like. Hope they do not change to that in the new release... If so I may have to change programs.. seriously. Or simply back date my clock.. I don't like doing that but a lot of people do just that. for me it would stop my auto system restore points on my computer :wow:

I'm just happy that other people are enjoying playing with the Funky Flames method as much as I am...
Some tips for enhancing your experience...
* Try them with a white background - they work great! Especially with single colored gradients...
* To make them more colorful, try changing the Symmetry setting for each transform - say, for a 2 transform flame, change the Symmetry setting in the Editor window to 0.9 for transform/triangle 1 - then for transform/triangle 2, change the Symmetry to 0.1... then select the Color setting in the Editor window for transform/triangle 2, and drag it to the right.... (this tip is from Cyble13... thanks!)
* Try selecting Sinusoidal, Swirl, or Fisheye trends only in the Mutation window and click a few times to see some really cool effects - especially on the negative valued Spherical starting flames.
* If you see an interesting shape or combination in a Funky Flame - don't be shy to zoom in and really get some cool detail happening!
...and for Carolyn... the "F" beta of Apophysis has no expiry date... and has a few of the nice easy access buttons like Zoom, Translate, and Rotate to make things easier for you... lol!

Thanks T I appreciate your input on this if I could only save your page in whole with images and writting I'd be fine..... my computer just will not same it in total...... yes I have the F version remember I said I had the test of the i version well he pulled the plug on it. on f it doesn't render all the way it is really strange if I click on the screen sometimes it will finish up or just plain crash. At this point if the new version comes out with the same editor as in z I'm going to have to learn another program... which is going to break my heart :cries: :cries: since I love Apo so much......Guess I'll wait and see what happens next..
Thanks for the updated tips on your funky flames.. I'm going to try and keep it up near the top so people can try it out. if you want to post a link to your gallery here for new people to see your work thats ok to do or post a thumb of one here in the forum...... either way is okay or let me know and I'll post the link for you...
Thanks again Carolyn

Still haven't had time to even try them been to busy with Terragen and poser. oh well one day it is on desktop though :)
I wonder how many people have downloaded the pdf file in the free section via link to your site T. any idea?

No idea... lol! I've seen a lot of images posted to various galleries around the internet that look very similar to ones that can be created using this method - but one can never be 100% sure, can one?
I don't ask for any credit when people use this method. I have put it out there as a purely sharing exercise. I don't believe in keeping secrets when I find something cool to do with Apophysis.

I don't either that is why I don't ask for credit on starter flames or grads can't imagine some actually asking for credit after all they should always be given free of will with no credit asked for.. Seems there is always a motive though for some who make starter sets.
Anyway I was just wondering if you had any record of how many times it was downloaded.
Boy am I beat right now, I did letters for the site for the last 6 hours plus and right now I can not see well enough to do much.
I will reopen that thread you mentioned I just hope it goes in a specific direction.
Thanks T.

As far as I can tell, there have been about 20 downloads of the zipped PDF file version of my tutorial - but about 200 views of the webpage version...
There have been over 200 downloads of the rezipped Apophysis 2.02 Z version that I have hosted at my site also... only since the 1st of October! That's one heck of a popular little application... lol!
I can't wait for the next installment from Robert, Piotr, and Peter... should be very soon methinks... and I'll be hosting a copy of that once I get my hands on it too...

Thanks T I was hoping you would host the new version coming out.
I figured they must have run into some problems otherwise the date is past due from what Ronald said.
Good deal just start a new thread and I'll stick it I know a few here that are waiting for the new version. including myself. I check almost daily source forge so far no luck. :(
Thanks again for sharing with all of us your tut and the download for Apo
